Apple iPhone Duo foldable phone

As Apple’s first-ever foldable handset, demand for the iPhone Duo could be huge.

From Friday 16 October, compare iPhone Duo deals from Three, Vodafone, iD Mobile and more, then filter by storage, data allowance and upfront cost to find a contract that suits your budget.

The iPhone Duo at a glance

Now entering the foldables market, Apple has made its iPhone Duo passport sized for both a familiar feel and pocket-friendliness.

Instead of one handset with an added bendable screen, it’s built as two devices in one: slim and standard-sized when closed, but opening out to near tablet dimensions. This means Apple has rejected a flip phone aesthetic in favour of a design that compliments other devices in its ecosystem - namely the iPad mini.

The iPhone Duo will be available for pre-order from Friday 16 October and will hit shop shelves the week after on Friday 23 October.

Dual screens and folding design explained

The iPhone Duo has a book-style design that opens along one single vertical hinge.

When closed, its 5.4-inch cover screen lets you carry out everyday tasks, like making calls, sending messages, checking payments and photos, etc., with ease. Plus, you won’t need to unfold it every time there’s a notification.

Opening the iPhone Duo up gives you increased screen space over a 7.6-inch inner display. Apps can switch display mid-task, too. So, for instance, if you start an email on the cover screen, you’ll be able to carry on writing inside with a full-sized keyboard without having to relaunch any apps.

How durable is the iPhone Duo screen and hinge?

As Apple’s thinnest ever iPhone, the iPhone Duo has a titanium frame and hinge cover to make it more durable for everyday use.

The iPhone Duo has a Ceramic Shield back and a Ceramic Shield 2 front, which Apple states gives it 3x better scratch resistance than the iPhone 17 Series.

At the same time, a crease-free main display adds to the Duo’s durability, while its liquid metal hinge is more elastic and resistant to wear. This ensures long-term reliability, making the iPhone Duo a practical choice.

How much does the iPhone Duo cost on contract?

On contract, the iPhone Duo with 256GB storage costs £66.63 a month from the manufacturer. This is over 30 months at 0% interest.

Since the iPhone Duo is a highly sought-after phone, SIM-free pricing starts at £1,999.

Remember, trading in your current handset could take a meaningful chunk off the total. Although, since the iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foray into foldables, it’s likely you won’t get as much (or anything at all) towards upgrading to this as you would for a standard iPhone handset.

Spreading the cost over a 24- or 36-month contract does make the iPhone Duo more manageable. But if you mainly want an upgraded Apple flagship rather than a folding screen, the iPhone 18 Pro delivers similar performance without any premiums for this new foldable hardware.

iPhone Duo camera system: What specs do you get?

The iPhone Duo carries a 48MP dual rear camera - main sensor plus ultrawide - alongside one 12MP front camera perfect for video calls.

But the Duo’s dual-screen design changes how you take pictures and videos. Because the cover screen works as a live viewfinder, you can take selfies with the main 48MP rear camera - a big step up from any front-facing lens.

Half-fold the phone and it becomes its own tripod for:

Battery life and split-screen Apple Intelligence

Powering two displays, the iPhone Duo splits its all-day capacity across two cells - one in each half of the chassis - balancing weight and slimness.

Apple states that you can get up to 44 hours video playback when using the iPhone Duo’s outer display, and up to 31 hours video playback when using its inner display.

Its A20 Pro chip and C2 modem also unlock the Duo’s party trick: split-screen Apple Intelligence. You can run two apps side-by-side on the inner display and Apple Intelligence works across both - summarising a document in one window while drafting a reply in the other.

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: Which flagship is right for you?

If you’re undecided between the iPhone Duo and the iPhone 18 Pro Max, think of the Pro Max as a strong all-rounder and the Duo as more versatile.

With the iPhone Duo, screen space comes first. It’s the better choice for scrolling, viewing content, split-screen work and anyone who wants a phone and small tablet in one device, besides currently being the only iPhone that folds.

But you should choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want a higher-performing selfie camera, variable aperture and longer overall battery life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a visible crease on the iPhone Duo screen?

down chevron

There’s a slight crease in the iPhone Duo’s screen, but Apple’s titanium-covered hinge keeps it discreet.

While the crease is visible at an angle on a dark screen, you shouldn’t notice it with everyday use.

Does the iPhone Duo support Apple Pencil?

While the iPhone Duo doesn’t currently support Apple Pencil, Apple states that it will later in the year with USB-C.

If sketching or note-taking with additional Apple accessories matters to you, this device will soon be compatible. In the meantime, consider using an iPad mini to tide you over until this upgrade is complete.

Is the iPhone Duo waterproof?

The iPhone 18 Duo carries an IP68 rating, meaning it’s protected against water splashes and rain, as well as being dust resistant.

Can I get the iPhone Duo with no upfront cost?

down chevron

You might be able to get the iPhone Duo with no upfront cost. But if so, you’d pay a higher monthly bill because it’s a premium handset.

Of course, there’s always the chance that deals with no upfront cost don’t appear right away. Since Apple’s first foldable smartphone will probably carry a high price tag, due to its complex dual-screen design, the initial release likely requires an upfront payment that reflects this manufacturing.

Does the iPhone Duo use a standard phone case?

No, the iPhone 18 Duo needs a two-part case made for its dual-screen design.

If demand allows, Apple and third-party makers might sell dedicated iPhone 18 Duo cases.
